Unit conversion method
Choose a measurement category, source unit, destination unit, and value. Most conversions use an exact or published factor through a shared base unit. Temperature uses affine formulas because its scales have different zero points.
Formula and method
Standard units: result = value × source factor ÷ destination factor. Temperature conversions first convert to kelvin.
Worked example
One meter equals approximately 3.2808 feet; 0°C equals 32°F.
How to interpret the result
Most categories convert through a shared base unit, reducing the chance of inconsistent pair-by-pair factors. Temperature is different because Celsius and Fahrenheit have offsets as well as scale factors. Results are displayed with practical rounding, while the underlying JavaScript calculation retains more precision.
Important limitations
- Calculations run locally and work without an external API.
- Displayed results are rounded, while calculations use full JavaScript precision.
Common questions
Why are some decimals very long?
Many unit ratios cannot be represented exactly in binary floating point. Small trailing differences are numerical representation effects, not additional measurement accuracy.
Can converted values have more precision than the input?
No. A conversion changes units, not measurement quality. Round the answer to a precision supported by the original measurement and the conversion factor you need.
