What this 2026 federal tax estimate includes

Enter taxable income after deductions—not gross salary. The calculator applies the official 2026 ordinary federal income-tax brackets for single, married filing jointly, or head of household status.

Formula and method

Federal brackets are marginal: only the portion of taxable income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket’s rate.

Worked example

For a single filer with $75,000 of 2026 taxable income, estimated ordinary federal income tax is $11,212 before credits and special taxes.

How to interpret the result

Enter taxable income after deductions, not salary or total cash received. The result applies ordinary federal brackets progressively, so entering a higher bracket does not cause all income to be taxed at that rate. Effective rate is total estimated tax divided by taxable income and is normally lower than the marginal rate.

Important limitations

  • State and local tax, credits, payroll tax, capital gains, alternative minimum tax, and other special rules are excluded.
  • Educational estimate only; consult the IRS or a qualified tax professional.

Common questions

Does this estimate a refund or amount due?

No. Refunds and balances due depend on withholding, estimated payments, refundable credits, and the final return. This tool only estimates ordinary federal income tax on the entered taxable income.

Are capital gains and self-employment taxes included?

No. Preferential capital-gain rates, payroll and self-employment taxes, credits, phaseouts, state taxes, and special surtaxes require additional calculations.
